Thoughts on Wrapping Good in Theory

As I wrap up the short story I was working on, the one about Saoirse from Good In Theory, I find myself continually pulled to the next project.

I’ll be honest, writing a book, for me, is far more exciting than writing a short story because I get to play in the world longer, develop more characters, write more history, and describe places and feelings that I feel deserve the depth of a whole book.

While a short story has the allure of being short and thus “easy” to check the box and be done, that’s never really been as interesting to me as a deeper study.

That being said, I am still excited about the short story, which will be out in July of 2025 and feature a little of Saoirse’s background as she reconnects with her dad’s sister, who she never met. It’s a beautiful closure for her, and I’m happy to share it!

You might have noticed some new images on my site and social recently. I have selected the image of the Snowqualmie River as the cover image for my next book, Good in Theory, because that’s where Lacey and Saoirse hike in the book. They grew up there (in the Seattle area), and they hiked there as children. The surrounding forest is also where Cedarbrook House is, and that plays a huge part in the story.

The funny thing about Cedarbrook is that I didn’t have a plan for it being part of the book at the beginning. I had three main storylines —

1) The leak at the lab and why it happened

2) Lacey and Saoirse reconnecting and rebuilding their friendship

3) Lacey’s soulmate, who she started dreaming about as a teen, coming into her life

But the “haunted house,” as one of my writing group members calls it, didn’t appear until I had been reading a couple books that featured old houses, and I realized the way the history of a home and its occupants would make an interesting connection point among those three stories. So a couple chapters in, I ended up adding it to my outline.

Now that the book is done, the beta readers have responded, and my writing group has read almost the whole thing (only 2 chapters left for them to respond on!), I’m glad I did. I find generational history and group history fascinating and love drawing connections in that way, and I think you’ll be happy to see how everything connects up because of Cedarbrook House when the book launches in March.

For now, happy holidays! May your reading corner be cozy and have a neverending stack of amazing stories to get lost in!
